Phthalate-free PVC

Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, commonly abbreviated D.E.H.P. , is an organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO2C8H17)2. Is is sometimes called Dioctyl phthalate and abbreviated D.O.P. It is the most important "phthalate," being the diester of phthalic acid and the branched-chain 2-ethylhexanol.

This colourless viscous liquid is soluble in oil, but not in water. It possesses good plasticising properties and is used extensively for soft and flexible P.V.C. products.

Due to some concerns over the use of D.E.H.P. , in particular for use in food packaging and children's toys, other Plasticisers have been developed to enable D.E.H.P. -free P.V.C. to be offered. These are now available from Altec.
